My 302 in my Cougar has decided it doesn’t like to make oil pressure at hot idle anymore and I can hear an ever so slight knock when the RPM’s drop after giving it gas in park. When I put my hand on the fender I can feel the vibration from the knock as well. I had a felling a little while back that the bottom end was on borrowed time, but I was hoping for another year or so out of it. The hunt is on for a short block and swap my current heads, camshaft, intake, and other supporting parts onto it.
Couldn’t have happened at a worse time though. Looks like I’ll be using a stock shortblock as opposed to the stroker I was planning on down the road as I just can’t justify $4K right now.....
In the past 5 years I’ve had probably 15 months of driving time with this damn car between the paint, transmission rebuild, and other assorted crap. I posted on a forum I belong to specific to these cars about it. If one of those forum guys shows up with cash I’ll sell it as is. I’m DONE.
The car.....

If the knock isn’t really bad could you do an emergency fix with just swapping new rod bearings?

To be fair, Ford V8s of that era weren’t big fans of oil pressure. It’s a thing they do, and you probably could drive it for a year without issue. My dad did with the 351W in his truck. You could hear it knock inside the house.

This - it’s actually not a bad job to roll new bearings in with the engine still in the car. I did bearings and rings on a 4 banger on a saturday. You can ‘roll’ the bearings in by turning the crank.

Been running 15-50 in the car for about 8 years. Last rebuild was on the loose side. Plan was for boost. Never happened.....
Kick in the ass is there’s no loss in power.....

Well, sounds like you can keep driving it, for a while at least. This is one of those times when you get to experiment with all the additives they sell at Pep Boys and Autozone and let us know which one works! Motor Honey? Restore? Lucas? SAE30?

HAHAHA! I actually contemplated this. I’ve used the STP stuff in the past on an old car I used to have. Worked well enough. I think I’m gonna try the Lucas. A mechanic friend swears by it for his customers trying to prolong the inevitable. It’s just gonna be for the ride to where we’re gonna pull her apart. 16 miles.

Took an actual pressure test gauge and hooked it up. Hot idle @700 RPM: 8 PSI Hot run @ 2000 RPM: 25 PSI. 2 years ago I did these same tests with the same weight oil. The results were 21 and 50+ respectively.....
